LoneLady + Sad Lovers And Giants

Manchester based LoneLady just released her single Immaterial on Warp. I was surprised to hear such a brit poppy, classic alternative sound coming out from them, but this song is great. Its got a strong Echo & The Bunnymen/Kitchens of Distinction sound to it.

Then we have Vendetta by Sad Lovers And Giants. A great slow, post punk gem with a haunting guitar melody and string synth that always reminds me of Showtime's Masters of Horror theme song.

Monster In Black Tights

Everyone needs to hear this romantic, catchy, campy tune by Screaming Lord Sutch & The Savages. The original horror-punk/death-rockers!

The Snake Corps

I recently discovered The Snake Corps, a late eighties/early nineties post-punk group very similar to The Chameleons, with a more dream-pop feel to the music rather than the conventional up-beat rock bands of the era. The slower, melody driven track featured here Everything Turns Blue is off their 1990 album Smother Earth.

Graduation Day soundtrack

In 1981 at the height of the slasher genre, Troma released their own attempt at cashing in on its popularity. The movie contains many long and pointless scenes, one of which is the high school dance. House band Felony provides this 7 minute track Gangster Rock. It helps to see their cheesy, eyeliner wearing faces but simply hearing the lead singer's strained voice is just as good. The audio was recorded direct from the dvd, so you get an extra bonus of some dialog and sound effects mixed in.

City of The Living Dead

This 1980 horror film has an amazing soundtrack produced by Fabio Frizzi. Reminiscent of fellow Italian prog rockers Goblin (lots of 80's synths on top of 70's funk-inspired drums). Check the film out for the infamous girl-vomiting-blood-and-organs scene.

Nico - I'm Not Sayin'

This seemingly rare track is a great pop tune from 1965, originally by Canadian Gordon Lightfoot.

Nancy Fortune

This track Electric Signal is from her 2001 ep on Viewlexx, but she just came out with a full length on Clone that compiles that release with other songs.
She has a very dark, minimal electro style with a voice that reminds me of Bjork at times.

Genius Rap

Dr. Jeckyll & Mr. Hyde rap on this 1981 track over Tom Tom Club's super hit single Genius Of Love. This was the first sample before Grandmaster Flash did their version a year later.

Suicide

This John Cale track Suicide is off the American Psycho soundtrack. Its featured during one of the greatest scenes in film history-Patrick Bateman taking a shower and describing his morning routine in excruciating detail.

Silly Love Songs

This first one is a rare Cure track To The Sky. It sounds like it would fit well on some 80's teen movie soundtrack, although I think it came out in the 90's. It's been on several compilations but I couldn't find much info on the original release. I love the flute sounding synth and delayed guitar.

Second is an acoustic version of Under The Milky Way by The Church, everyone's favorite song off the Donnie Darko soundtrack, along with The Killing Moon.

Lastly we have Kissing The Machine by Elektric Music, Karl Bartos' solo work after leaving Kraftwerk (almost as creative of a name as Electronic - Bernard Sumner and Johnny Marr's 90's side project, who Bartos actually collaborated with later). This is my favorite off the album because it features the singer of OMD and is similar to their 1985 hit If You Leave.

MINA

The Italian pop singer Mina Mazzini had a pretty interesting career, beginning when she was just 19 years old. Going through her videos you can see she has changed her look many times. Short hair, long hair, curly hair, from bleached blonde to brunette. She wore heavy eye makeup (Siouxsie Sioux anyone?), sang about sex, was banned from television, and shocked audiences with her shaved eyebrows-thirty years before Marilyn Manson would pull the same stunt.

Heres a video of her doing Nancy Sinatra's hit Bang, Bang. I love 60s female singers and girl groups, so I'll be posting similar artists in the near future.

The Gun Club

In the past few months I have been frequently listening to each release from The Gun Club. They have such a unique mid-tempo early LA punk-blues-rockabilly sound with hints of goth rock if not only in their image. Here I've provided one track from their first four albums.

Black Train - Fire of Love (1981)

Run Through The Jungle - Miami (1982)

The Stranger In Our Town - The Las Vegas Story (1984)

Bill Bailey - Mother Juno (1987)

Gravitational Lense

I've been into a lot of dark, ambient, soundtrack stuff for the past few months. One of the pioneers of this sound is Arpanet (aka Dopplereffekt, Gerald Donald, etc). I found this mix of a track off his 2006 release Inertial Frame. It basically just adds a beat, extra synths, and muffled bassline to the otherwise beat-less song but it pays off.

The original track features haunting voice stabs on top of eerie, funhouse synths before transitioning into a 2 minute long experimental space warp.

Arpanet - Gravitational Lense (Chwolson Xallarap Remix)

Welcome to the blog

I love music too much to not do anything with it, so I decided to let you know what I'm listening to now and then. Hopefully you'll like it and maybe discover some stuff you never knew about.
